| I think that Paul's bass is VERY prevalent in the Beatles' music and is equally prevalent in his work with Wings and solo recordings, I just wish he'd play the Rickenbacker again! I like the idea of him playing the Hofner on the older Beatles stuff and songs from Let it Be but would LUV to hear the Rickenbacker played on stuff from Pepper, MMT, etc, and of course WINGS! |

I don't think he'd be able to lift the rick up in the air with one hand like he does with the hofner
I've got a solid body guitar and its quite heavy to lift like that (I imagine I'm paul in my mirror wearing my paul T shirt) and I always think the necks gonna snap XD |

Yeah, it's a bit heavier to hold, but Man, you look good playing it and its sound jumps out in a way the Hofner doesn't.
Please please please drag it out of its case and play it up there, It was made for Penny Lane (as were the last 7 trumpet notes that you erased on that one ... hows about put those back in too !!) Back in those early summer 67 days, I could crank up Baby You're a Rich Man on the record player and those first bass hits and slides could knock out house windows blocks away ! Too heavy !! Band on the Run, Jet .. any of those need that Ric. This is a piece of history and this bass belongs in your hands ... at least sometimes. |
Mind, on the Band On The Run album I think he used a Fender JB. Check out the pics in the booklet. Most other Wings recordings used the fab Ric, as well as all tours, except the 79-tour where the Yamaha was used. You know? |

Hmm, think you're right about the Fender used on BOTR, had forgot about that. In regard to Paul not being able to lift the heavy Ric into the air...yup, think you're right on that account too. That's okay, he doesn't have to lift it in the air |

Suppose so
I'd like him to use a range of basses
What basses does he use now? I know he uses hofner but I think its two different ones? |

I wonder if he still uses that 5 string bass that showed up during the 1989/90 tour on any of his studio projects. It's probably the least talked about bass of any bass guitars Paul owns _________________ Put it there if it weighs a ton...but don't expect me to move it |

New idea...
The stage is dark. Boom! First chord of Junior's Farm.
The spotlight lightens Brian.
Opening Riff of Junior's Farm. Spotlight lightens Rusty.
Bass-part. Paul walks up on stage. With his Rickenbacker.
Walks to the microphone (whol stage is in light by this time).
Hold the headstock a bit higher and says: "Good evening *city/country of visit*" and then...
He begins to sing Junior's Farm!
And after that... bring the Rick back for some other tunes.
Revolver/Sgt. Pepper/Magical Mystery Tour/Wings, as previously mentioned. _________________

Paul might take out an other bass, such as a Fender Jazz Bass, so he could start iconizing that one.
For his MAF/Fireman songs. And the songs on forthcoming albums.
I think it would look great on him, nowadays.

Paul had a special, lighter Rickenbacker made for him in the late 70's. He was already tiring of the weight at that point which is why he went with the Yamaha for the '79 tour. Don't know why he never used the lighter one in concert. _________________ McCartney Recording Sessions:

I suspect the Yamaha weighed as much or more than the Rick. Both are solid body basses, the Rick is 33.5" scale and the Yamaha is a 34" scale, I suspect.
The Hofner is a 30" scale and is completely hollowbody, weighs about 5 lbs. That Rick weighs about 8 or 9 lbs, same for the Yamaha.
At this point, there is no reason for Paul to burden himself with a heavy bass that will not enhance his live sound at all. In an arena or stadium, the bass is just that: bass. Bottom end. The Hofner does the job. _________________ Denver, CO 6/76

LUV this photo! Looks like a late '60/early '70s Fender bass.
Someone commented on the bass Paul was using during the Flowers in the Dirt tour, that one looks HEAVY! Was that the Wal bass?
The Ric is heavier but honesty, no heavier than some Les Pauls. |
